Latinas in Tech Apprenticeship: Build a Chatbot for WEAVE

Alexan Innovation, in partnership with Latinas in Tech Sacramento, is offering a fantastic opportunity to make a difference to a local non-profit, WEAVE, and at the same time to learn how to design, develop and test a chatbot application that uses some of the latest AI and Machine Learning cloud technologies.

You will gain hands-on experience on a real-world project. Read on to learn more about how to turn this chatbot in to a reality!

What is the opportunity?

A six month, part-time apprenticeship to help develop an Artificial Intelligence and Cloud chatbot platform for the Sacramento charity WEAVE, Inc. This chatbot will provide immediate assistance and guidance for victims or potential victims of violence or sexual assault as well as anyone looking for answers about these topics, and where to get help

What is required?

An interest in technology! Programming experience – particularly in web-development and JavaScript - is desirable, but not required. Good communication skills, a strong work ethic and a desire to learn and adapt are essential!

Who can apply?

This apprenticeship is aimed at latinas either in technology or interested in technology – you must be at least 18 years old.

What is the commitment?

Potentially two one-hour meetings with the client per month, and between four and six one-hour meetings with the Alexan Innovation team. These meetings include training sessions. You may also be expected to work on client deliverables such as design documentation or actual development tasks outside of these meetings.

Work will be allocated depending on skillset and can be flexible depending on your schedule and availability.

What will I get out of it?

You’ll learn first-hand how a real IT project works. Learn agile software development methodologies, contract and client management skills as well as human-centered design principles.

In addition, you will get hands-on development experience using Cloud AI technologies as well as coding frameworks to interact with these services. You will grow your network in Sacramento and significantly boost your resume and experience!

Who is running it?

This project will be run by Alexan Innovation, LLC, and directed by the CEO, Ben Rogers. Ben is on the board of directors for WEAVE and has more than 10 years of experience in Management Consulting and IT Software Development. Ben is also passionate about training and mentoring and is dedicated to improving opportunities in technology for under-represented groups.
